Knowledge is power, and the more our profession understands about compassion fatigue, the more prepared we will be to identify, minimize, and cope with compassion fatigue in the individual as well as the organization. We begin with a definition of compassion fatigue and burnout, and how they differ. Then we address the question, '"How did we get here?" by exploring the five phases of adjustment to a career in care giving. Specific stressors and satisfiers have been identified for various positions in our profession, including the veterinarian, veterinary technician and assistant, front office staff and practice management. We take a broad look at the main causes of individual compassion fatigue and its symptoms. The session will conclude with a look at organizational compassion fatigue, and how this "cost of caring" may be affecting your bottom line. We conclude with the Eight Laws Governing a Healthy Workplace.

"Zoonoses in Companion Animal Practice - Are We Doing Enough?" (Click to view brochure.)

State Public Health Veterinarian, WI Division of Public Health
Dr. Jim Kazmierczak is the State Public Health Veterinarian with the Wisconsin Division of Public Health. He has been working there as a communicable disease epidemiologist since 1988. His job primarily involves the control and epidemiology of zoonotic diseases. Dr. Kazmierczak received a DVM degree from the University of Illinois and after seven years of clinical practice, returned to school to get his MS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is currently an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences within the UW's School of Medicine and Public Health, as well as in the Department of Pathobiological Sciences at the UW School of Veterinary Medicine.
Discussion: Prior to the lecture, there will be a discussion to follow up on the email survey that was distributed in July regarding communicating zoonotic disease risks with clients. The discussion is limited to 20 people, so RSVP early if you would like to attend. You do not need to have completed the survey to participate.
Lecture Synopsis: The importance of zoonoses and client education about zoonoses will be discussed, with an emphasis on risk reduction for pets who come into contact with immune compromised persons. Additionally, a few select zoonoses will be addressed including canine brucellosis and salmonellosis.
